PRINCEss ROCKS THE BOWL!

When BROOKLYN BOWL announced Thursday night’s show on Tuesday morning, one of our followers put it well when she said, “It’s like a dream.” Comedienne, actress, and former SNL genius, MAYA RUDOLPH and THE ROOTS would be playing the music of PRINCE and for 15 dollars, anyone that wanted to could bear witness. It did seem like unreal and dreamlike…the kind of weird revelation that would cause you to pinch yourself and awake in a daze of confusion. “I just had the strangest dream that Maya Rudolph was singing Prince songs with The Roots at Brooklyn Bowl.”
But if there was any remaining doubt, this scenario proved to be very real when Miss Rudolph, along with her PRINCEss partner, GRETCHEN LIEBERUM, and America’s favorite party band hit the stage at around midnight last night to fire up a sold out crowd at Brooklyn Bowl with the spirit of the Purple one. The crowd itself was kind of random for the venue, more like a cross section of 35-and-under SNL and Jimmy Fallon viewers than those who normally frequent Brooklyn Bowl, but everyone became really close really quickly as PRINCEss laid down a set that would have been a respectable one even if it had come from The Artist, himself.
Digging deeper than the obvious hits, PRINCEss kept it going strong with sultry numbers like “Dirty Mind” and “Head,” giving Rudolph the opportunity to writhe around and stroke the mike stand in her uniquely hilarious manner. She entertained the audience with some brief patter between songs, but she mostly kept the vibe going by doing what she does best…just being Maya Rudolph. With her hair down and dressed in a buttoned up trench coat that never came off, Rudolph has the uncanny ability to make people laugh with the most subtle of facial expressions and exaggerated dance moves, which came across particularly well in an intimate venue of this size.

This event, which will be repeated tonight at THE CAPITOL THEATRE in Port Chester, drew some notable fans, including CHRIS ROCK and Q-TIP (pictured above) who exchanged bro hugs and shared a few laughs after the show. Rather than spending any more time here reading about how much fun we had last night, we recommend that you get your tickets and hop on the next train out of Grand Central and check it out for yourself tonight at The Cap. If you can’t manage that, or if you need more convincing, check out last night’s encore performance of PURPLE RAIN on THE BROOKLYNGLUTTON VIDEO TUBE.
NOTE: Our original videos from this incredible event have been re-blogged and circulated all over the internet, which is awesome, as only maybe 600 or so people had the joy of being there, so it is great for the rest of the universe to share in the fun of these musically talented and hilarious people playing incredible songs and having a party. We wanted to make sure that these videos would be readily accessible from THE BROOKLYN GLUTTON, since this is where they originated. Those who have seen these seem to be enjoying them a lot. Hopefully more of you will find them here and pass them along. We will continue to try to bring you great videos like these in the future. Let us know what you think!
